Godzilla vs. Kong, also known as "Apex" is a 2021 American science fiction monster film produced by Legendary Pictures. It is the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse, after 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and serves as a sequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.

Godzilla vs. Kong has finally been released after being postponed from May 29, 2020 to March 13, 2020, November 20, 2020, and ultimately May 21, 2021. On March 31, 2021, it will be released in the United States. The film was also accessible on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.

The film is directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein from a narrative by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. King of the Monsters was written by the same trio. Five years after King of the Monsters, Godzilla and Kong face off in a massive battle after Ghidorah's rampage.

It is the clash of legends that occurs in "Godzilla vs. Kong" when two mythical rivals engage in a magnificent conflict that has the potential to change the course of history. During their treacherous trip to uncover Kong's actual home, he and his guards are accompanied by Jia, a little orphaned girl with whom he has established an unusual and deep attachment. A raging Godzilla, however, suddenly places them in the way of the heroes, causing widespread devastation around the planet. There is a secret that lurks deep beneath the center of the Earth, and it begins with the epic battle between two titans, which was sparked by invisible powers and is just the beginning of the story.

Meanwhile, Bernie Hayes, an employee of the Apex Cybernetics corporation and host of a Titan conspiracy theory podcast known as the Titan Truth Podcast, exfiltrates information suggesting sinister activities at a Pensacola Apex facility, but as he finished downloading the files, Godzilla arrives and unexpectedly attacks. During Godzilla's rampage, Bernie discovers a strange piece of technology resembling a giant robotic eye among the ruins of the facility.

However, when Godzilla is stunned by depth charges, the combat is split up, allowing Kong to surface for air and re-engage the fight.

With no other option, Nathan disables all of the ships' powers in order to fool Godzilla into thinking he destroyed them and Kong was defeated. After seeing the shattered fleet, he swims away, delighted with his win. The team chooses to fly Kong to an Antarctica entry point for the Hollow Earth, where Godzilla was first frozen, as they prepare to reactivate the ships. Jia explains to Kong that his home is beyond the door, but he refuses to enter.

Realizing Kong can't survive in the cold weather and that they can't return him to Skull Island, Nathan asks Ilene if Kong will go if he thinks there are others like him through there and she tells Jia to ask Kong that his family could possibly be down there, prompting the Titan to enter the tunnel and the teams follow him in their HEAVs.

Madison and Josh track down Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and agrees to help them with their investigation. They arrive to Apex headquarters to find that the "eye" Bernie described earlier has disappeared. The group sealed and transported Skullcrawler eggs by mistake while carrying them to Hong Kong through an underground tunnel.

They come face to face with Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical Godzilla led by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Ren Serizawa. Once the mecha is fired up, Walter sends in a massive adult Skullcrawler codenamed "Number 10" to put Mechagodzilla's Titan-fighting powers to the test. As the Skullcrawler approaches Madison, Josh, and Bernie, Mechagodzilla captures and restrains it before severing it with a massive red energy beam. The mecha immediately shuts down due to power supply constraints.

Walter intends to vanquish Mechagodzilla by channeling the powers of the Hollow Earth. Apex is assaulting Godzilla because he and the Titans are being replaced by humans. Ren is sitting inside the severed head of Ghidorah that Apex got from Alan Jonah five years ago, operating Mechagodzilla through radio waves.

Kong and Nathan's crew discover a similar biosphere within the Hollow Earth. They are assaulted by two Warbats, one of which destroys one of the HEAVs. Kong saves the party by killing the first Warbat and swinging its carcass onto the second, knocking it out. The Warbat is suffocated by Nathan's team's HEAV rockets, allowing Kong to escape and pound the monster to death before munching on its innards.

Following that, Kong and Nathan's squad begin their quest, finally arriving at a massive stone temple that previously belonged to Kong's forefathers. They discover remnants of an old fight between Kong's and Godzilla's races as they investigate within, and Kong discovers an antique axe crafted from a dorsal plate of a dead member of Godzilla's race before sitting atop a colossal throne. Kong discovers that the same power source that Nathan's crew needs to enhance Mechagodzilla's power supply can also replenish the axe. Despite Ilene's protests that Apex cannot just grab the discovery of the century, Maia and the Apex crew employ spider-like drones to collect the power source and return it to their Hong Kong headquarters. Maia orders her guards to fire at Nathan's crew, only for Kong to aggressively yell at them in response. Meanwhile, Mechagodzilla sends a signal to Godzilla, who detects the machine's activation and rushes towards Hong Kong.

Godzilla can't fly, which is a good thing. Maia and her crew attempt to leave their HEAV, but Kong snatches it on their way out and crushes it in his hand, killing Maia and her crew inside.

In response to the roar of Godzilla as the monster offers him with another challenge, Kong accepts and continues to make his way through the hole produced by Godzilla's atomic breath to Hong Kong with his axe in hand, with Ilene and Nathan following him in their HEAV. When Kong arrives in Hong Kong and confronts Godzilla, he battles him again again, this time obtaining the upper hand over the Titan to the point that he shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat in order to prevent him from launching his atomic breath again. King Kong realizes that his axe can not only deflect Godzilla's atomic breath, but it can also absorb it, and he uses his weapon to strike the Titan in the thigh, however Godzilla quickly takes the axe and tosses it away. When Godzilla strikes, Kong uses the structures of Hong Kong and his greater agility to escape and evade his blows. After retrieving his axe, he charges it and unleashes an explosion that knocks both Titans back, giving Nathan the impression that Kong has won the second fight.

Godzilla regains his footing as he continues his quest for Kong atop a structure. Godzilla is ambushed from above by Kong, who holds him in a chokehold and intends to strangle him in order to divert his attention. Although Kong tried to knock Godzilla off of him with a blow to the damaged leg, Godzilla manages to free himself and wreak his wrath on Kong, dislocating his left arm and cutting him with his claws twice. Godzilla roars ferociously at Kong, who is held down and confined.

Kong is saved by Godzilla, who spares his rival's life before walking away, leaving him with a commotio cordis that ultimately causes him to go into convulsions.

Walter instructs Ren to unleash Mechagodzilla on Godzilla from Apex's headquarters, and Ren eagerly accepts. Reminding Walter that the new Hollow Earth energy source must be tested first, Ren tells him to turn on the mecha. Walter ignores his pleadings and coldly commands him to do so. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are brought to Walter by Apex security for breaking into the headquarters. While Madison accuses Walter of inciting Godzilla into war and for triggering this in the first place, Walter boldly states that it was his decision to allow humans to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans that led to this.

Unbeknownst to Walter, Mechagodzilla goes wild under the influence of both the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks, ending in the robot murdering Walter with a sweep of its palm and Ren being electrocuted. Mechagodzilla, now possessed by Ghidorah's mind, escapes from the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain and rampages over the city, evading confrontation with Godzilla. Mechagodzilla quickly approaches Godzilla and launches a volley of missiles at its biological counterpart before the two engage in combat.

Following his reawakening, Kong observes the fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla before encountering Jia, who attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla is not really his adversary. Though Kong first disbelieves her as he continues to watch Godzilla being annihilated by Mechagodzilla, Jia explains to him that the robot is the "real" adversary, not Godzilla. After a brief while, Kong relinquishes his vengeance and enters fight to assist Godzilla in repairing his dislocated limb.

As soon as Madison sees Mark again, she invites him into her program so that he may talk about the Roswell Monarch facility with Josh and Bernie. Godzilla attacks Kong, causing the Titan to grab his axe and resume the fight. Despite Godzilla's reluctance to strike, Kong remains calm. As a result, the battle between Kong's species and Godzilla's is over. We see Godzilla return to the water peacefully with Kong following him, while everyone else looks on.

Later, Monarch established an observation post in the Hollow Earth. Ilene, Nathan, and Jia happen to spot Kong on his morning walk one day. Kong climbs atop a rock, banging his chest and embracing Jia as his new home and realm in his screaming proclamation of himself as King of the Hollow Earth.

Several allusions to the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion may be seen in the film:

The scenario in which Kong leaps from ship to ship is reminiscent to a scene in which Eva Unit-02 leaps from ship to ship in order to dodge an angel, a la Godzilla.

A pyramid on top of a pyramid-like structure is reminiscent of the Central Dogma, where Mechagodzilla has been stationed.
